She was 5 years-old at DFD, she was mauled by dogs and later died from her injuries. She was attacked by starving dogs 200 meters from her home. She had stopped to pet a puppy when she was attacked. A bylaw was passed in Little Red River reserve after her death that any dog found untied and loss with be caught and impounded for a day. The owners of the dogs were not held responsible for his death.

Summary:

 

She was 16 years-old and 9 months pregnant at DFD, she was walking across the pedestrian crosswalk with her boyfriend outside the Winnipeg Hospital when she was struck by a drunk driver. She was transported into the hospital where doctors were able to save her son life but not Leona’s life. Leona’s son was born with developmental disabilities.

The drunk driver was Jose and he was arrested and charged with drunk driving causing death and drunk driving causing bodily harm. His trial was set for early 2000 and six of the original charges were dropped by the judge. He was found guilty of drunk driving and sentenced to probation and a $750 fine.
