Summary:

She was 27 years-old at DFD, she had recently given birth to a baby which was taken away by Social Servies Agencies because of her addiction to drugs.

During Gilberts trail prosecution use the death of 10 un-named first nations women and 4 un-named first nations women during the 6 week surveillance to establish the same pattern Gilbert used to prey on vulnerable women who had their own addiction problems by offering them booze and sometimes offering to pay them to drink, which the Judge allowed to be entered under the believe that further charges would be placed against Gilbert for those crimes. Gilbert admitted to being with these women and providing them the alcohol and being the only one with them when they died. Gilbert admitted during his testimony that he paid the women to drink and to have sex with him. No further charges were ever laid against Gilbert for these deaths.

Gilbert rented a hotel room in his name and checked both Vanessa and himself in to the room. Over the course of a 12 hours period they drank hard liquor until Vanessa died. Gilbert called the police to say that Vanessa was dead in his room and did not leave his name but the police traced the call and placed him under surveillance for 6 weeks one month later after another female Shade, Edna died while drinking with him.

Coroners report stated that Vanessa’s blood alcohol level was 0.91, more than 11 times the legal limit for driving a vehicle and that she would of passed out long before she could of drank to that level herself. Cause of death was inhaling gastric contents into her air passage and a consequent inability to breathe. Police found the body to be leaking thick black ooze from her mouth and noise when they arrived at the scene.

Gilbert was arrested and charged with Manslaughter for the death of Vanessa in Dec-87. He was found guilty in 20-Oct-89 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. On 26-Nov-91 his sentenced was reduced to 9 years. He was released in 1994 after serving 6 years on his 12 year sentence and moved to the Victoria, BC area.

Gilbert had a court ordered ban not enter or drink in bars or public placed where alcohol was served and not to be in the company of any women that are drinking or if he is drinking at any time. Gilbert was also confined to Victoria Island as part of his parole. Gilbert breached his probation many times and was deemed a ‘High risk offender’ but he was still allowed to walk free.

Gilbert died on 7-Jul-06 at the age of 75.
